It means someone who's identity isn't known. 'Corpse' is just one of the uses.

Because of that, we were brought to a ritual arranged by the King in Yellow and transported to the Dreamlands. This led to any number of unpleasant situations, including a three month stint in the King's prison pits and being separated from my partner.

I had had my memory erased by spending untold lifetimes in the Dark World, the dumping ground where the remains of dead worlds and dead timelines end up.

Fair. It's definitely nice that way.
